SMS-based Solutions for the Social Good…

Why SMS?
SMS (short message service) text messaging is the most widely used data application in the world today.  Text messaging has existed for more than 20 years and SMS capabilities are available on even the most basic of mobile “feature” phones. The International Telecommunications Union estimates that, as of early-2013, there were 6.8 billion mobile phone subscriptions worldwide, while Portio Research Ltd. forecasts subscriptions to exceed the total world population in 2014 and annual worldwide text messages will top 8 trillion by 2015. Today, more people in the world have access to mobile phone services than clean water, electricity or toilets.  Although the rate of growth for mobile phone subscriptions will slow as the world market reaches a saturation point, SMS messaging will remain a dominant means of communication for rich and poor alike for years to come. This site seeks to highlight how SMS messaging services are being used to support international development and contribute to the social good.
